Last night I went to dinner at Bub City which is a newer BBQ restaurant in River North. I read mixed reviews on yelp before we went, but still was excited to go because even people who didn’t seem to like the food usually said the atmosphere was what made the restaurant really cool.
The only reservation I could get was at 6:30, which worked out okay because I was meeting a friend after work anyways. We were seated right away and ordered an appetizer of fried pickles shortly after we sat down. They brought out the cutest plates that looked like old fashioned paper plates, but were really plastic. I actually didn’t take any pictures because it was pretty dark and they wouldn’t have turned out–but it was good enough that I wanted to tell you about it anyways.
The fried pickles were awesome! Some of the best I have had. They used really small, thinly sliced pickles so that the breading stayed on and the pickles still had a bit of crunch. My favorite way!
I ended up ordering the chili and the cheese grits–I know, I know, I should have gotten more traditional bbq probably–and I was thinking about getting the pulled pork, but I actually loved the chili. It was delicious-plus it had a few kinds of meat (not just ground beef) and was really filling. I ordered the grits because I thought just the chili wouldn’t be enough, but I ended up eating less than half of the grits. I was full but I also didn’t like the grits very much–and I love grits so I think these just weren’t very good.
Next time I am getting the fried chicken sandwich for sure
But, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad. Plus, I like this bar because it is such a different atmosphere than other bars in the area–we really don’t have many country spots. I definitely want to go back and try it out at night. I also saw they have live band karoake!
And if you like whiskey, they have whiskey flights which is pretty cool. Almost makes me wish I liked whiskey.
On another completely random note…have you guys had Kerrygold cheese?
I like and buy Kerrygold butter from Trader Joe’s since it comes from grass fed cows, but had never had the cheese until last week. It’s a little pricey but I bought it today and–totally worth it. This cheese is SO much more flavorful than the lowfat stuff-and it’s all natural! It isn’t full of crap and orange dye like other cheddar’s. I think I will buy this from now on instead of other cheddar cheeses. Have you guys had it? It’s definitely worth a try!
One more work day till the weekend! Anyone celebrating St. Patty’s Day? I am hoping to make it downtown to see the green river this year and then will see where the day takes me! Hope everyone has a fun St. Patty’s Day and great weekend!
