Hello, hope everyone had a great Labor Day Weekend! Mine was fun and pretty relaxing–I took it as a chance to unplug and not take any pictures. It was nice to have that extra day off from work too. My food intake was all over the map this weekend. But it mostly consisted of carbs and lots of them..
Biscuit Cinnamon Rolls–recipe is from Joy the Baker. I made them last weekend and suggest that you make them very soon. I am not even really a cinnamon roll person–I just don’t love them and could easily pass up a cinnamon roll for a cookie or something savory. So, I don’t know what made me want to make these. All I know is that I’m glad I did and you will be too! The ‘biscuit’ part means they aren’t toochachey sweet–they have just enough sweetness from the sugars and are denser due to the biscuit consistency. It also means that they are super easy to make and don’t require yeast, rising or any of that.
Speaking of toothachey–I just found out a few weeks ago that I have 2 cavities and I’m getting them filled tomorrow. You guys, I am so scared! That’s what happens when you don’t go to the dentist for 2 whole years I guess–embarrassing but true. Still not sure why I didn’t but man am I regretting it now. I have never had a cavity before so I’m praying that I will not be a huge baby and will make it through okay.
Back to the food…
Breakfast of Champions…Cracklin Oat Bran. Growing up, my dad and I used to eat breakfast together everyday before school/work while reading the comics and Cracklin Oat Bran was our cereal of choice. It still is my very favorite cereal (after Light N Tasty of course). I found over the weekend just how much of it I can eat in one sitting–a reminder of why I don’t buy it more than maybe once per year.
And last but not least…
Pizza from Piece. I finally went last week. I can’t believe I hadn’t been before due to the rave reviews I have heard from just about everyone in Chicago. My friend Carolyn just moved back to Chicago and we met up for dinner here. Piece is not only a pizza place, but also a brewery! We went around 8 on a Wednesday and the place was super crowded but we only ended up waiting a couple of minutes for a table. I loved the atmosphere at Piece because it was crowded and loud–but it wasn’t so loud that you had trouble hearing another person talk.
Piece offers three different pizza bases and then you build from there. The choices are red–traditional red sauce with mozzarella, white-which is a plain crust brushed with olive oil and garlic with mozzarella cheese, and plain which is red sauce with garlic and parmesan–but no mozzarella. From the base, you build your own pizza. They have lots of different toppings that range from the standard pepperoni and sausage to things like mashed potatoes and clams. We had trouble deciding which one to get so we ended up picking a few toppings that we thought sounded good first. We decided on artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers and Italian sausage which we thought would go best with the white pizza. The pizza did not take long at all, and it comes out on a large rectangle baking sheet.
It was a good choice because our pizza was delicious! The pizza is very thin with a really crispy crust. I loved the pizza part, I actually like thin crust way better than deep dish–which seems to be a near-crime in this city. I thought the crust was just a little too crunchy–like borderline thought-I-was-going-to-break-a-tooth, especially once it was leftover, but I still ate it so I couldn’t have hated it that much. I sure am bringing up my teeth a lot today, huh?
I also ordered one of the beers that was a summer special I think, but now I can’t figure out which one it was. Regardless, it was good. It was a heavier beer than what I’m used to but I asked the waitress for a recommendation for a lighter beer and she made a good suggestion with this one.
We ordered a medium pizza which was definitely more than enough for the two of us. We split the leftovers and I still got a full meal out of the remaining pizza.
Now that I have finally been to Piece, I hope that I will definitely go back soon to try out another pizza combo. Now I know what everyone was talking about because this place really is that good!
