GT Fish and Oyster Review

Happy Sunday!  Hope everyone had a great weekend! Sorry for the lack of posting that has been going on around here.   My mom came into town for the weekend and we had a pretty busy time!   It was a lot of fun and I was so happy to get to spend some quality time with my mom, especially since it is Mother’s Day.   Happy Mother’s Day to the best mom in the world!

After work on Thursday, I walked to State Street to meet up and we got doing what we do best…shopping of course!  We shopped for a long while until we had a dinner reservation at 9:30 at GT Fish and Oyster.  I was adament that I wanted to sit at an actual table instead of a communal table–pretty much because you will sometimes get some stares when taking pictures of your food.  But, turns out the way the tables are set up in the restaurant (really close to each other), we would have been fine at the communal table with much less of a wait.  So, lesson learned on my part.

The pictures we took are not great because the lighting was super dark, but if you live in Chicago or are visiting, I highly recommend this restaurant.   The menu is tapas style and the menu is divided into hot and cold.  The way they do it is they bring out the dishes from lightest to heaviest, usually if not always bringing the cold dishes first.

We decided to split four different dishes, and our waiter said that would be plenty of food.   We ordered one thing from the cold side, and 3 from the hot.

From the cold side we had the bento box.  My mom wasn’t sure about this one but I had seen it at another table when we walked in and I thought it looked really good so we took a chance.    The combo was tuna sashimi, salmon tartare and hamachi.  I liked all three but the salmon tartare was my absolute favorite.  My mom didn’t like it so I ate the whole thing.  It was served on a bed of seaweed salad–another of my favs.  I could have eaten this for a full entree.

From the hot side we ordered the lobster roll, oyster po boy sliders and cauliflower.   There were probably about 8 other dishes that also sounded good–our trouble was just deciding which ones.  We were thinking about also ordering the fish and chips because I read a lot of good reviews about them but at the last minute decided against it because we thought that would be too much food.  I’m glad we didn’t, because we definitely had more than enough.

The Oyster sliders were insanely good–spicy but not overly spicy with kimchi and peanuts.   I think they might have been my favorite thing after the salmon tartare.  The cauliflower was tempura battered and served with pickles and a yogurt sauce.  This dish was tasty and I loved the interesting combo of pickles + cauliflower + yogurt sauce.  The lobster roll had huge pieces of lobster on a buttery texas toast type roll.  That dish was my mom’s favorite.  I enjoyed it but actually didn’t like it as much as I was expecting because I love lobster.  Everything that we ordered from the hot side was pretty heavy especially since a lot of it was fried but since each dish was fairly small, it didn’t become too much or too heavy.  I left feeling full but not stuffed or gross.

We also split a bottle of wine and for all of the food the total bill was really reasonable!  I realized a few minutes before leaving how badly I had to go to the bathroom after all that wine, but figured we were close to leaving so I would just wait.   Since I have the smallest bladder in the world, by the time we got up to leave, I really really had to pee!  We were standing in line (it was a one stall bathroom) and I must have looked really desperate because a guy walking into the mens room offered up the stall since he was using the urinal.  I gladly accepted and proceeded to pee for what felt like 5 minutes straight–straight out of Austin Powers.   My mom told me she hadn’t realized that it had been such an emergency that I felt the need to use the mens room.  Yep, it definitely was.

I took Friday off of work and spent Thursday night with my mom at her hotel.  We got up fairly early and headed out to do some shopping.  We scored some major deals and after shopping for awhile, we headed out to an event in the suburbs.   Seasons 52 is opening a new location in Oakbrook and invited us to a dinner to preview the new menu.  It was such an awesome and fun event and definitely deserves its own post.   My mom had eaten at Season’s 52 before, but this was my first time.  The food was so good and the wine was equally as good.   More about that in the next few days.

I had a busy Saturday too and can’t believe the weekend is almost over!  Going to try and run a few errands and enjoy the beautiful weather we are having!  I hope everyone had a great weekend and Happy Mother’s Day to all the mom’s out there, especially mine!
