The life of a wedding flower…

Hope everyone had great weekends!  This weekend flew by as usual.  I figured I would just do a quick weekend recap of what has happened since we talked on Friday.

Friday evening after a brief 1.5 hour commute home, I took a spin class!  The only other time I have taken spinning was in college and it wasn’t an organized class or anything, just taught by my roommates teammate.  It was free and a great intro into spin.  I loved the class and her but as much as I liked it then, I was always hesitant to try spin again, just not thinking I would really like it.  But with not being able to run, I knew I needed to get some cardio in and I can really only handle so much ellipticaling.  It wasn’t until I took the class on Friday that I realized how great of a teacher this girl in college had been.  She was super motivating and would make up scenarios like ‘the person you hate most in the world is ahead of you and you have to beat them’, etc.  The teacher on Friday was okay, but not great.  I also wish he would of maybe given us a run down of what was coming so that I knew how much I had left and how much energy I could exert since spinning is really self-controlled.  I was sweating about 4 minutes in though, so I guess it was still a great workout.   I don’t think I’m gonna be a spinning convert though.

This may be tmi, but one reason I don’t like spinning is because it really hurts my butt.  Not in a ‘feel the burn’ in your glutes type of way, like honestly my butt felt like it was totally bruised the next day.  Does this happen to anyone else???  My roommate who went with me said she felt fine.  Please tell me I am not alone in this.

So moving on, Friday night I went out for sushi to a byob.  We went to a little place called Torajiro and it was delicious!  We were a little skeptical when we saw it because it was tiny and looked not that great from the outside and was also really hot inside (random but these things are important too).  But, all of our food was really good!  I got a seaweed salad, a spicy tuna roll and a spicy scallop roll.  All delicious!  All the staff were really nice even though we stayed for a long time after eating and ended up being the last people there.  oops!  Our waitress was also the only waitress there and did a great job managing all of her tables.  I had a bottle of wine by myself and ended up with a bit of a headache on Saturday morning.

These are actually reused pictures, but they get the job done.

Sat morning the Comcast guy FINALLY came after our cable went out last weekend.  I could write a whole other blog about my hatred of Comcast.  Hm, there is an idea.  Turns out though, this time (for once) they were not at fault.  Remember when I told you guys about the power issues we had last weekend?   Well…turns out our cable cords got totally burnt!  So they had to replace them.

After that business was in order, I went to the gym.  I knew I wanted to do some weights, so I put together a plan from The Rules of Lifting for Women.  One of my favorite books for weight workouts.  Sometimes I forget that you don’t have to spend a long time doing weights to reap the benefits and I end up adding more and more exercises onto my workout.  I like this book because it stresses that you don’t have to spend hours in the gym, you can just do a couple of total body exercises but you should be lifting heavy weights.

Writing out my plan

I changed it a little from the book and ended up doing:

Cardio to start–maybe like 20-30 minutes?  I ended up doing 50 minutes because the room I wanted to use had a class in it.

A: Squat push/press

B1: One legged step up (alternating) with a shoulder press at the top

B2: Dumbbell bent over row–I like this one because you bend over and lift one leg behind you so you get some core work in too

C1: Static lunge with rear foot on bosu

C2: (Girl) pushups

D1: 60 second plank

D2: Stayin alive– my dad named this one when he saw me doing it.  You start with a weight (held in both hands) up by your right ear and then swing it horizontally across body so you end with weight on outside of left foot.  Think of doing a full body ‘stayin alive’.

D3: Hamstring curl on ball

2 sets of 15 for each, unless otherwise noted.  I was finished with the entire thing in about 30 minutes.  Not too shabby!  I do really highly recommend the New Rules of Weight Lifting for Women.  My mom bought her own copy after seeing mine.  Oh wait, she bought mine too.  I think she took pity on me after she realized that it only costs 10 dollars but I was still was just repeatedly checking it out from the library over and over again.  Whatever works!

I was lucky that the weather was nice both yesterday and today so I got to lay out both days!  Yesterday at the park which was really hot, today at the beach!  I much prefer the beach for the lake, but sometimes I don’t feel like walking that far and end up at the park since it is only a few blocks away.  I love when the weather is perfect in Chicago.  Sometimes in the winter I forget why I live here, but today was definitely one of those days that reminded me why I love it.

Saturday night I went to a friend’s for drinks before going out.  Check out the beautiful city views she has!

I also found out last night what happens to all the flowers after weddings..they give them to drunk people walking by!  They were loading all these beautiful flowers into a waiting van and we asked what they did with the flowers.  The guys said they were being thrown out so we asked if we could have some.  I wish I had actually been going home right from there and I would have been able to keep them.   The life of a wedding flower is not a long one I guess.

All in all it was a really fun weekend! I made a few recipes that I’m going to share, but since this is getting a little long I’ll just show you some other foods that I ate and save the recipe for next time.

Awesome pizza!  I think it might be new at Trader Joe’s?  It isn’t a traditional pizza because it tastes more like mexican food–it was like eating a flat taco with a really thick cornmeal soft shell– kind of like El Charro tacos for any Michiganders.

Recipe coming soon!

Make this healthy ranch asap.  You will be glad you did.

What did you guys do this weekend?  Or eat?  Or both!
