Fiesta Weekend

This weekend is speeding by!  I’ll recap from Thursday night…

Thursday evening, Kristen, Alex and I ran 9 miles after work.  I got pretty nervous about the run when I got in my car to drive home from work and saw that it was 93 degrees out.  I don’t generally do that well running in heat but it actually went ok.  After about 4-5 miles, it cooled off a little bit and there was a breeze on the lake the whole time.  I also carried a water bottle with me which I normally don’t do but it was key for this run.  Kristen and Alex were getting really mad at me because I was being a pace Nazi and kept checking my Garmin and telling them we needed to speed up.  I think they wanted to kill me by the end :)

Thursday night I went out to watch the Wings game, a few friends were already in town for the wedding festivities this weekend.  The night was fun even though the Wing’s lost :( .  I got up bright and early Friday for a half day of work!  Love half day weeks.  I was in a lot of pain from Thursdays run so I decided to go to CorePower Yoga on a whim.  CorePower offers a free week of yoga for new students so I felt like it would be a good chance to stretch out my muscles and give yoga a try.  I have done DVD’s and such but never a real class.  Verdict?  I loved it!  Such a great stretch and while it was a beginner class and didn’t feel that hard, I am really sore today which is how I know it must have been a great workout.  Also on a random note, yesterday when I was driving home from work I saw this:

See that turtle sandbox? I used to have the same one when I was little so I got pretty excited when I saw it.  But, I also started laughing pretty hard because my parents just shared with me a few weeks ago that when I was probably 4 or 5, my dad accidentally ran over the sandbox and I told my mom to call the police on him.  I guess that turtle was pretty dear to my heart!

After yoga, I had a massage scheduled.  A few of my girlfriends got me a massage for my birthday last June and I still hadn’t used it!  Can you believe it? I actually forgot I had it for awhile and just found it a few weeks ago.  I figured I would wait until I really needed it (from training). It was great, so relaxing…I wish I could get massages every week.

Last night we went to a restaurant called Fiesta Mexicana in Lincoln Park.  It is a pretty casual mexican restaurant but was a lot of fun.  Our waiter forgot about us for most of the night, but besides that it was a good time and the food was good.  I kind of ordered a weird meal that wasn’t very pretty so I didn’t take pics of it…salad, 1 taco and a side of beans.  Really random.

By Friday night, almost everyone was in town for the wedding so we all headed out to a bar after dinner.  It was so much fun to see everyone from high school/college.  A few friends I hadn’t seen since we graduated!

My friend Brad is staying with us for the weekend and made me run 3 miles morning.  I ended up being glad I went because it helped me feel better but I was not feeling it when I first got up.  It was also good because Brad runs faster than I do so it pushed me to go faster than I might on my own.  Today is his birthday too, Happy Birthday Brad!!!

After our run we went to lunch/brunch at Tillie’s and I had a chopped chicken salad.  I ordered blue cheese on the side because I always think that I don’t like it, but I ended up adding it in, it was really good!  Whenever I kind of don’t like something, I make myself keep trying it again and again, and then I usually end up liking it!  I did this with shrimp and I guess blue cheese now too!

After lunch I decided to make some cookies- Chocolate Chocolate Chip.  Great to eat 5 or so of these right before a wedding, I highly recommend it especially if you are wearing a tight dress.

Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookies slightly adapted from The Food Network

  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 stick butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/8 t chili powder
Combine flour, baking soda, salt, chili powder.  In a separate bowl combine sugars, eggs, butter, vanilla.   Add the sugar mixture into the flour.  Then add the chocolate chips.   Bake at 350 for 10 minutes.
I cut the butter in half from the original recipe and 1 stick was definitely enough.  I also added a tiny bit of chili powder which I think was a unique addition.  It doesn’t have a strong taste but the combination of chili powder and chocolate is a really good one.
Now it is time to get ready for the wedding!   Have a great rest of your Saturday!
